BIM Takes Forward New Funding Initiative targeting Fishing Communities and Inshore Fishermen in Mayo/Sligo

Information and Ideas Meetings Will be Held in the

Broadhaven Hotel Wednesday the 15th May at 7.30pm

All those connected with or interested in fisheries, the marine economy, and Marine tourism are encouraged to attend.

 

Programme Description

The reduction in fishing activity, and continued challenges for the small boat fleet to remain viable, has impacted on the communities for whom fishing is a definitive part of their world and daily lives. The purpose of a new BIM Programme is to enable fishing communities to create new and sustainable sources of income and to improve their quality of life. It does this by empowering local people, those who best understand both the problems and the aspirations of fisheries communities, in particular by providing them with the tools and resources to develop and adapt.  The goal will be to protect that deeply rooted tradition, provide opportunities for the communities affected to re shape their economic future, while retaining as much as possible of their heritage, values and sense of being ‘fishing communities’.

A strategy is being prepared for the Coastal Counties of Mayo/Sligo coasts over the next eight weeks which will identify priorities for spend in the area. The strategy will be like a LEADER strategy, except with a very specific focus on fishing communities and activities that celebrate and build linkages to the sea and marine resources.

The strategy is just for the period 2013-2015 with a very modest budget in it for the region, but it is likely that more substantial support will be forthcoming in future programmes and it will be important to demonstrate the value of this initiative and to prove it can target fishing communities in a very specific way, as well as add value and complement other initiatives such as the Rural Development Programme.

In 2013 BIM will make calls for proposals under the programme, in accordance with the strategy that has been prepared. The programme could fund projects under the following headings:

  • Small fisheries and tourism infrastructure development: i.e. Improvements to port facilities such as, converting old ice plants/stores into tourist amenities coffee shops etc,
  • Skills transfer: i.e. training & up-skilling (perhaps to crewmen of vessels which have ceased fishing,
  • Diversification: i.e.  MarineTourism,
  • Promoting the consumption of seafood: i.e.. Seafood festivals, schools competitions,
  • Adding value to fisheries: i.e. supporting the development of artisan products/establishing regional branding.

 

 

Public Meeting

Consultant Kate Burns and associates have been contracted to develop the strategy and with BIM are holding a public consultation session at 7.30pm on Wednesday,  15th May in the Broadhaven Hotel in Belmullet.  We would encourage those communities living within 10 kilometres of the coast, who have a connection with coastal and fishing livelihood to come along and express their views and ideas.

De ghnáth is páistí idir 2 bliain agus 10mí agus 5 bliain d’aois ag an 1ú lá Mí Mheán Fómhair a bhíonn i gceist. Den chuid is mó is ón Scéim Saorbhliain Réamhscolaíochta nó ó tháillí na dtuismitheoirí a íoctar an Naíonra. Má tá suim agat do pháiste nó do pháistí a chlárú dean teagmháil linn ar 086 862 6038 no 097 85939. Normally children between 2 years 10 months and 5 years of age by 1st Sept can enrol. Naíonra costs are normally covered free of charge under Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE), otherwise there will be a nominal charge per week. Beidh Club Óige Paróiste na Cille Móire i Halla Naomh Bhreandáin, Eachléim gach Deardaoin & Aoine ó 6.15 – 7.45. Beidh an gnáth Club Óige ar siúl gach Deardaoin agus beidh sraithchomórtas sport ar siúl gach Aoine (Ag tosnú le sacair). Cille Móire Parish Youth Club will be held in St. Brendan’s Hall, Eachléim every Thursday and Friday from 6.15 – 7.45 p.m. The normal youth club will run every Thursday and a Sports league will run every Friday. If you wish to take part in any of the activities of the Club you must pay a registration & insurance fee of €10. There will be a fee of €1 per night after that.

Drop in centre / Sports Club / Ionad Buail Isteach / Club Spórt
Halla Naomh Bhreandáin, Eachléim will open 2 times a week as a Drop In Centre / Sports hall for the community. The New Sports Officer in the area will run a series of sporting and social events as Gaeilge. There are 2 different nights that the hall will be open. Wednesday 7.30 – 9.30 for Adults and Fridays 7.30 – 9.00 for secondary school teenagers. For Insurance reasons there will be a membership fee for the year. Defibrillator – a life saver.
11 community members have now been trained in emergency CPR and using the Defib. The Elly to Blacksod Debrillator is located in Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre in Eachléim. If somebody is unresponsive you may need a Defib – Call the Ambulance 999 or 112 (from a mobile) and they will contact the community team. You can also call the community team directly 083 123 6 123 – write this number on the fridge or beside the phone.

During the Assisted Emigration Period of 1883-1884 many people, including whole families travelled great distances to the shores of Elly Bay, an inlet of Blacksod Bay, to embark on the Allan Line Steamships for Quebec and Boston, as the following extract entitled “Emigration from Ireland”. Mr Tukes Fund July 1883 confirms.

…………It was necessary in most cases, to bring the families coming from a distance by cart to Belmullet, where food and lodgings were provided.
The embarkations took place from the shores of Elly Bay – an inlet of Blacksod Bay – at which place the “Allan” Line had arranged for their steamers to call weekly, en route to Galway. The embarkation of the emigrants was naturally a cause for much anxiety, in as much as, although Blacksod Bay affords perhaps one of the finest anchorages in the West of Ireland – the Channel Squadron having lain there some few years since – still the shores of Elly Bay cannot be approached even at half-tide; added to which there is no pier, or in fact any accommodation for embarking the people. After due consultation with Staff-Captain Sutton, of H.M.S. “Seahorse” and Lieut. Beddoes, commanding the Coast-Guard, it was found that there was no alternative, except to arrange that the emigrants should be ready to embark on each occasion at high-water: the boats of the “Seahorse” and Coast-Guard taking them from the shore to the gunboat which then ran along side the “Allan” steamer……

Ba mhaith liom cuireadh a sheoladh chuig gach duine teacht ag an ócáid cheiliúrtha oíche amárach 29ú Nollaig @ 7 in Ionad Deirbhile, Eachléim mar chomhartha ómóis agus buíochais do Mháire Uí Ruadhain agus í ag éirí as mar bhainisteoir an Chomharchumainn.

Máire Uí Ruadháins family, friends and colleagues joined her in Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre to celebrate her contribution to the community and achievements during her 11 years as Manager of Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile and the Heritage Centre in Eachléim. Máire launched our new website www.ionaddeirbhile.ie and Sean O Gallachóir launched our Photographic exhibition of the Blacksod Whaling Company photos taken 100 years ago are on display in Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre.
