Official Wild Atlantic Way Experience

Official Wild Atlantic Way Experience … Pacáiste Oifigiúil ar Slí an Atlantaigh Fhiáin

Visit the Ionad Deirbhile Assisted Emigration Exhibition

Take a trip to the heritage centre in An Eachléim in County Mayo’s Gaeltacht (Irish speaking region). Examine the Assisted Emigration Exhibition and discover the stories of 19th century emigrants to Canada and the US.

Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre is a trove of information about the communities living on the Mullet Peninsula. This experience lasts two to three hours and will take you back 150 years, when thousands of people from the west of Ireland were forced by poverty to take ships to Canada and the US. Afterwards visit the memorial garden at An Fód Dubh (Blacksod 3.8km from the Heritage Centre) which was created in 2013 to mark the 130th anniversary of the first emigration sailing.

The exhibition brings to life those who had no choice but to leave their homeland, and it lists each man, woman and child who did so.

“Is mar a chéile stair s’againne agus stair s’acusan. Trí chuimhneamh ar na daoine a d’imigh, cuirimid fáilte abhaile roimh a muintir.”

“Our history is their history and theirs is ours. By remembering the people who left, we welcome back their descendants.”
Rosemarie Geraghty, Blacksod Bay Emigration Researcher, C.F.I.D. / S.S.T. Paróiste na Cille Móire.
